The film Gundala (2019) by Joko Anwar (Servant of Satan, Pintu Terlarang, Mode Anomali) is also about life choices in responding to the dark past. We are introduced by the origin story of two main characters who oppose each other in this film, namely Sancaka and Pengkor. Both have a childhood that Nauzubillah min zalik, extraordinary weight. Little Sancaka (Muzakki Ramdhan) was left dead by his father (Rio Dewanto) because he was stabbed to death at work, due to being the driver of a labor demonstration against the company owner. Shortly afterwards, his mother (Marissa Anita) also left him, after saying goodbye outside the city to find work but never returned. Little Sancaka finally had to fight alone to survive.

As a spectator, I was quite tired of seeing a small Sancaka running back and forth chased by thugs. Fortunately, a helper deity named Awang (Faris Fadjar Munggaran) came to teach Sancaka martial arts. But unfortunately their meeting was only instant. Awang, who, when he grew up, would later become Godam, went with the train that passes once a year in their city, leaving a testament to Sancaka, "Don't like to interfere in other people's business if you want to be safe." But we all know, those words are not obeyed by Sancaka. He actually does the opposite in the name of justice, which is to be a patriot defender of the little people.

The fate of a small club is the same as money with Sancaka. His father, a landlord, was vilified by his subordinates, then the house and its contents were burned down by the villagers. In fact, some of the clubber's body has become deformed due to burns. Pengkor then spent his childhood in an orphanage. In that place, his "evil talent" is facilitated. As a result of often being abused by the caretakers, Pengkor organized friends in the same boat to rebel and kill the caretakers in a sadistic way. Both have the same starting point, namely the dark past, but a different way of life makes them have to face each other at the end of the story. The clubman (Bront Palarae) as an adult transforms into a cruel mafia that can make a respectable member of the court fear with only his words.

Joko Anwar as always, always wants to look smart and critical in his films. In Gundala, he raised the issue of the dilapidated mentality of the people's representatives in the government which intersected with the rampant violence and oppression in the community. That's why people need patriots, role models like Gundala. The audience was spoiled with visually qualified, thanks to cinematography subscriptions to Joko, Ical Tanjung (Pengabdi Setan, Ave Mariam). Joko's creepy nuances also often appear in some scenes, for example when the Pengkor subordinates, Swara Batin (Cecep Arif Rahman) appear with a mask on the back of his head, or when Ghalam Zulham / Ghazul (Ario Bimo), the eternal enemy of Gundala, is digging the grave from Ki Wilawuk's headless body, an antagonist from the past who will later uncover the secrets of the lightning power of Gundala. The story also flowed smoothly, the character building of Sancaka and Pengkor was interesting to follow, until when Wulan (Tara Basro) suddenly appeared in need of Sancaka's help to beat up the market thugs. The film starts to look crowded, many want. But it's still OK, even if you just do that, just repetitive while sometimes interspersed with lightning flashes coming out of Sancaka's hands (but who is able to resist the charm of Tara Basro every time he appears on the screen?).

But stepping on the third round, Joko seemed afraid of the film running out of duration, finally he spilled all the ammo stories in the final third of the film. Joko seems to be trying too hard to look cool. Pengkor's story creates a poison serum that is intentionally injected into rice that is distributed to the people so that later pregnant women who consume rice will give birth to immoral children (?) Then Gundala, eh Sancaka also tried to stop the evil intentions. Interestingly, to fight Sancaka, Pengkor mobilized his students from orphanages that have different professions and killing skills. It's like a call for the film Mission Imposible but all its members are criminal. Unfortunately they dare to play the kroyokan and lose too quickly. Why don't you just pay in installments, Mas Joko, so they can perform optimally with each other's uniqueness?

The fighting choreography is also bear, too careful. Especially when the fight scene between Gundala and Swara Batin which was played by Cecep Arif Rahman. Maybe Kang Cecep is afraid of getting hit right? Fortunately the presence of one of the hero characters from BCU at the end of the film re-injected the audience's passion for cheering. The instructions are: She is a woman, incarnated by Dewi Sri, can fly, and has the strength of 250 male workers. Amazingly like in the movie "Batman V Superman" when Gal Gadot appeared suddenly in the middle of the arena with his Wonder Woman costume. Apart from all the shortcomings that exist, this Gundala film is the beginning of the era of Indonesian superhero films that are seriously worked on in a universe of cinema or universe. I can't wait to wait for the other heroes of Bumi Langit to appear in their respective films! Oh yes, don't go home after the end credit appears on the cinema screen, because there is a footage that is quite proud of our hero who turns out to be cool too ...
